Blackberry Hill Off Season

What to do off-season?Blackberry Hill Farms jam house

It’s Fall now and a lot of the places you go to get your fix of Blackberry Hill are closing. So, I’m going to review places that I know sell it all year-long.

Kansas City area Price Chopper and Hen House stores. Both of these large retailers offer limited selections of Blackberry Hill Farms products. Look in the produce isles or ask an employee for assistance. If your desired variety is not available please notify a store manager. Requests do not guarantee that they will get it but it does show product demand. They’ll never get it if no one ever asks.

Local flea markets: There are 5 local flea markets that are stocked with a large selection of Blackberry Hill. As of this month (October, 2018) Koehn Family Produce is the supplier for these locations. If you visit one and can’t find what you want, let us know. We will be more than happy to add your request to the stock. These locations are: Apple Tree Mall in Branson, MO. Trade Fair in Harrisonville, MO. Fancy Flamingo Flea Market in Joplin, MO. Country Classic Antiques in Bolivar, MO. Past Time Antiques in Pittsburg, KS.

Harps Foods offers varied selections of Blackberry Hill in several of their Arkansas locations. Please visit Harps Foods store locator to find the location nearest you. You may want to call and find out if what you want is available before you drive there.

The Food Fair in Rich Hill, MO definitely has the biggest selection you will find in any store. This store is stocked by Blackberry Hill Farms and boasts a display of 50 cases of product. There you can find just about every product there is to offer. They have a huge display at the front of the store.

As for now, these are the places that I can say for a fact will have Blackberry Hill Products available all year long. As new areas are brought to my attention I will be sure to post them. Distributors do not always share their customer base so it is very possible that it can be found in some areas I don’t know about. If you know something I don’t, please share!!Koehn Family Produce logo

Pickle Season at Blackberry Hill-Update

What’s up with pickle season?Blackberry Hill Farms Countryside Jam House

It’s pickle season at Blackberry Hill. Hands down the busiest time of year. The work day for the Mazelins starts around 3AM and ends long after the sun goes down.

At Blackberry Hill they grow everything they possibly can for their pickles and relishes. This includes cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers, zucchini, and cabbage. Possible more, that’s what I can think of off the top of my head.

Without any hired help the Mazelins plant, maintain, pick, chop, cut, cook/prepare, hand jar, and label every single jar themselves. Usually, with 2 or 3 people total. As many times as I have seen this in action, it NEVER ceases to amaze me. The efficiency and swiftness of the process compares to any “modern” facility. Last week alone they jarred over 2000 cases (24,000 jars) of Million Dollar Pickles.

The downside to pickle season has got to be time. During this approximately 6 week-long period it takes a little longer to get orders out the door. That is why we ask that customers allow up to 2 weeks for delivery. It’s usually not required except for this time of year. But of course, if anyone has any issues whatsoever they should feel free to email, text, or call.

Pickle Time at Blackberry Hill Farms

Pickle Process at Blackberry Hill!

Pickle time is fast approaching at Blackberry HIll Farms!

Pickles at Blackberry Hill are made only one time a year. In the beginning of summer when the cucumbers are perfect for pickling Blackberry Hill stops all jam and jelly production, focusing on pickled products only.

Vegetables that cannot be grown on the farm are sourced as locally as possible. Some veThe Power Behind Blackberry Hillggies are cut completely by hand. Others are chopped up using a vegetable preparation unit (robot Coupe) that has been converted from electrical to horse power. A PTO shaft from the machine to the outside of the building where it connects to a treadmill. A horse starts walking on the treadmill and PRESTO! Blackberry Hill Farms Pickles

All product batches at Blackberry Hill are small. This small-scale production is a big part of what gives these products that “just like grandma’s” flavor. Hamd Filling Jars at Blackberry Hill

All jars are packed by hand then sent through a hand cranked labeling machine fabricated by the Mazelins. Six jars at a time are placed on a small conveyor that feeds Blackberry Hill warehousethe jars past the labeling mechanism Those six are boxed up and six more are put on the conveyor. Over and over and over again.

All of these processes are repeated for thousands of cases of pickles!
